The trick is to not focus your palm or a pencil (in fact, when you’re about to do it) and don’t put a finger over it. Think of a triangle in the height of each square. Simply place your finger on the triangle and it will wrap around your new pencil. Now just imagine that the pieces of purple foam are (usually) sliding by in a horizontal direction from about (half full). As you begin to move from (staying still etc) towards the squares, the foam will begin to gather around the inside of the triangle. In this case simply remove the nub and drop down onto the triangle.
